Thrifty Bathroom Makeover ~ From Drab to Fab

Our thrifty bathroom makeover is finally complete! We have wanted to update this three piece guest bathroom since we bought our bungalow four years ago but it always seemed to get moved to the bottom of the DIY list. It was never a priority because, although it was drab and outdated, it was functional.

If you’ve been following along you know that we have been on a DIY roll for months so we figured what’s one more small makeover before the end of the year.

First and foremost I am a big believer of saving leftover materials from every DIY we do, (even though I often get overwhelmed with said materials taking up room in our storage area) but in this case, saving flooring and paint in particular, came in very handy!

Before I share all the details we need to give a BIG THANK YOU to our friends at Home Depot for sponsoring this project!

The first order of business in this bathroom was to remove the old countertop and sink and begin prepping the vanity for paint. I was super excited to try Behr Paints Colour of the Year, “Blue Print” to update the vanity. I love this vibrant blue so much, and coupled with the new white countertop, it is has quickly become the focal point of our guest bathroom. Not to get ahead of myself, this builder grade vanity had previously been given a quick and easy update with chalk paint and because I was using an enamel paint this time, I gave the vanity two coats of Zinseer Cover Stain oil based primer by Rustoleum. This was to ensure there would be no bleed through of the original shiny, honey oak.

Once the vanity was painted we moved onto painting three of the four walls. The change in colour may seem subtle to some but it really is a BIG change, we went from builder beige to a beautiful soft gray. . We had Behr Paint in Ultra White leftover from a previous project, it had not been tinted so I took it into my local Home Depot and had them mix it for me. I chose “Cotton Gray” which is a soft gray and was perfect choice to pair with “Blue Print”.

We used peel and stick wallpaper again on the largest wall behind the vanity from RoomMates Decor. Never ones to shy away from a challenge, we decided to hang this particular pattern horizontally rather than vertically and it turned out beautifully.

For the flooring we used vinyl plank flooring from a previous DIY three years ago. Luckily we had enough left and it was easy to install over the existing linoleum. This is the third room we have used vinyl plank flooring in and I can’t say enough about it. It’s functional, economical and doesn’t it look great?

Vinyl Plank Flooring is the perfect option for bathrooms when you do not want to add tile

When I originally started this project I thought I wanted to go with brass fixtures but quickly changed my mind when I found this light fixture at Home Depot. I love that it stands out against the light colours in the wallpaper and I also love how bright the space is now.

The black light fixture, faucets and outlets are an affordable upgrade!

This poly-marble countertop was purchased with a gift card I won from Bath Depot and only ended up costing me only $13! You can’t get much thriftier than that. And this beautiful matte black faucet from Home Depot is the perfect finishing touch. I love perfectly stark contrast it makes against the white countertop.

Many of the finishing touches you see were thrifted or again, things we had on hand. The pine for the towel rack and open shelving came from an old work bench in our basement. I stained the wood with Varathane stain by Rustoleum, the towel hooks I had on hand from a previous project and the vanity hardware, floor vent and wall vent I sprayed with Rustoleum spray paint in a Flat Black finish.

Open Shelving is such an easy and economical way to add decor in any space

The new mirror and hand towels are Winners finds that I purchased it with a gift card I got for my birthday! The bath mat is from Ikea and the cute new signs? I made them myself with leftover supplies in the basement and my Cricut!. All of the other finishing touches were from shopping my own home, my most favourite thing to do.

What do you guys think? I do believe this is one of our top 3 favourite DIY makeovers to date. And as usual, a super big shout out to my hubby because without him, none of these projects would be possible!

And now, drum roll please…..This Thrifty Bathroom Makeover was taken from Drab to Fab for under $500…thats a win in our books! Thanks Home Depot!
