Can you believe we have been in our new house for almost 7 weeks? It has been a whirlwind to say the least!
So far we have painted the kitchen, living room, fireplace, laundry/mudroom, master bedroom, guest bedroom, entryway and are working away on the loft and the loft bedroom. I still can’t believe how much we have accomplished in such a short period of time.
Over the past week and a half we removed the hardware off of most of the main floor interior doors and then removed the doors themselves from the hinges to make it easier to, you guessed it, PAINT THEM!
I was able to remove all the door hardware myself and just needed my hubby to help take the doors off the hinges. It kind of makes the process a bit more tedious but in the long run, makes it much easier to both sand and paint them.
The interior doors in our new home were all standard white interior doors. They were of course in good shape since they are just two years old, but I wouldn’t say they had been painted all that well. Before we started the prep work, the doors were cleaned with TSP to remove any dirt or grime, dried and then a light sand was needed with 220 grit sandpaper. Once this was done, the doors were ready for paint.
Once again we are using BEHR MARQUEE® paint. Can you guess what colour? If you’ve been following our painting journey in this house then I bet you can!
As I’ve mentioned in a previous blog posts, BEHR MARQUEE® “Limousine Leather” is the truest shade of “black” in the BEHR® line. And I got that from the most reliable source….the Paint Department at my local Home Depot! It is also the colour we used for our two accent walls in the kitchen and living room so naturally we used the same on our doors. The only difference being, the walls are done in an Eggshell finish and the doors we opted for Semi-gloss to make them pop a bit more next to the trim which is also all done in BEHR MARQUEE® Ultra White in a Semi-gloss finish.
I had wanted to paint our interior doors black at our last house but it always felt like such a daunting task that we just never got around to it. In our new home, I knew I wanted to just go for it while we were already in the midst of painting almost the entire house.
The interior doors in our home have a total smooth finish, no faux wood grain like you often see on builder grade doors. I decided to tackle the first door myself using a small brush for the detail/crevices and a foam roller for the rest to avoid brush strokes and roller lines. It was tedious and time consuming because you most definitely need to wait for the paint to dry between coats. This process always seems to take longer on hollow doors than walls. At this rate I was thinking it would take months to get all the doors in the house painted.
For this reason we decided to enlist the help of a friend with a sprayer, to help us spray the rest of the doors in BEHR MARQUEE® “Limousine Leather”. The sprayer gives you a much smoother finish and now that we’ve seen how easy it is, we are going to invest in one for ourselves. They are inexpensive and I’m amazed at the coverage even with a thicker paint like BEHR MARQUEE. Just phenomenal!
We still have six more doors to paint. I’m hoping to tackle them before the end of the month.
Painting your interior doors black is definitely a bold move but we are so happy we decided to go for it. They totally upped our modern rustic look over here. They really pop against the trim and the wall colour we chose for much of the main floor which is BEHR MARQUEE® “Off White”.
Once again, a total transformation thanks to the power of paint.!
