Barn Doors & Bad Paint Decisions

Week 3 coming in HOT!

This week has been all about the monotonous things like staining 1x2’s, painting trim, hanging a barn door....ok that wasn’t monotonous, that was hard! But all the little things we were dreading are done!

To recap, we are transforming a nook at the bottom of the basement stairs into my home office. This tiny space was the only part of the basement that was finished by the builder and it wasn’t pretty. So far we have extended the vinyl plank flooring we installed in our basement right on top of the gray ceramic tiles, painted two walls black, gave the existing trim a fresh coat of paint, stained and hung a barn door! (This is a Renin Barn Door from Costco that came unfinished with all of the hardware - it was a STEAL but is an in-store deal only)

Before we hung the barn door, we removed the existing white interior two panel hollow door (and quickly sold it on Facebook Marketplace...boom!). We hung the barn door on Sunday and I quickly decided the door casing and trim now needed to be painted black because everything looked too choppy. Naturally I asked my husband to then remove the barn door he had spent hours hanging.

Good times!

But totally worth it!

Painting the trim was quick and easy thanks to the Handy Paint Pail and disposable liners. I also love the magnet feature to keep your brush out of the paint. This handy little gadget was a definitely time saver!

Three coats of “Stargazing” by Digby Paints later, and I’m obsessed. Almost to the point of wanting to paint ALL the trim in the basement black....but don’t tell my husband!

I also splurged and spent $11 on two lengths of select pine 1x2’s. I stained them to match the barn door and we used them as moulding on the ceiling of the two black walls. I think it’s the perfect touch to pull everything together.

It’s so exciting to see my vision for this space coming to life, it’s looking even better then I imagined!

Next up is installing the gorgeous wall mural...skulls and flowers...two of my favourite things!

Be sure to check out the One Room Challenge website - there are so many amazing projects going on and so much inspiration!

Meet you here next week for another update!
